The Case for the Live Aboard

This was home from 1997 till 2005 more or less. This a Formosa 46 built by the Formosa yard in Taiwan in 1981. The design was based on the Peterson 44 performance cruiser. Owners of both boats still argue the relative merits of the two vessels but I just watch. It stupid, it’s fun, it gets old real quick. I prefer to “run what you brung”. This vessel was not only our home for eight years, we cruised in it, we raced it, and we put it on a semi and had it trucked 1200 miles north when we finally moved permanently to the state of Washington.

Why would any sane person want to do this? Well, people shoot themselves in the foot constantly, usually by accident. This didn’t seem to be nearly as painful a way to set ourselves apart  while we fled the madding crowd. In other words, it was time for my midlife crisis and this was just as sexy as any girlfriend many years too young and not as nearly as expensive in the long run. And my dear sweet wife was just as sick of paying a mortgage as I and just as disappointed with child rearing.
